Integrative Dry Needling at Wellbridge Physical Therapy
Targeted Pain Relief Backed by Science
At Wellbridge Physical Therapy, we offer Integrative Dry Needling (IDN) as part of our evidence-based approach to treating musculoskeletal and neuromuscular pain. Performed by licensed therapists with advanced training and certification, IDN can be an effective component of your comprehensive rehabilitation plan.
What Is Integrative Dry Needling?
Integrative Dry Needling is a highly effective technique used to treat a wide range of orthopedic and neuromuscular conditions. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, IDN is based on modern Western medicine, including neuroanatomy and the musculoskeletal system.
A fine, sterile filament needle is inserted into specific trigger points or dysfunctional tissue. This stimulates a healing response by creating micro-lesions that break up taut muscle bands, normalize inflammatory processes, and desensitize the nervous system—all of which help reduce pain and restore function.
While dry needling is a powerful tool, it is not appropriate for all patients or conditions. Your therapist will determine whether this treatment is appropriate for you during your evaluation.
How Does It Work?
Dry needling works by:
-
Disrupting dysfunctional nerve impulses between the muscle and nervous system
-
Releasing shortened or tight tissues
-
Increasing blood flow and oxygenation
-
Reducing chemical irritation in painful areas
-
Encouraging the body’s natural healing process
The result is a decrease in pain, improved mobility, and enhanced muscle performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dry Needling painful?
Most patients tolerate dry needling well. The needles are extremely thin and flexible, which allows for minimal discomfort upon insertion. Some patients experience a brief “twitch” response or mild cramping sensation, which is a normal and often desirable therapeutic effect.
Are the needles sterile?
Yes. We only use single-use, sterile, disposable needles for every treatment.
How will I feel after treatment?
Some patients feel immediate relief or improved range of motion. Others may experience temporary soreness or achiness similar to post-exercise muscle fatigue. Mild bruising may also occur but is not harmful. These symptoms usually resolve within 24–48 hours and can be managed with heat, gentle movement, or hydration.
Can dry needling make symptoms worse?
It is uncommon, but some patients may feel an initial increase in symptoms. This is typically short-lived. If discomfort persists beyond 1–2 days, please notify your therapist so your treatment can be adjusted accordingly.
Will I continue other therapy treatments?
Yes. Dry needling is one component of your comprehensive care plan. You will continue with manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, postural retraining, and other techniques based on your individual needs.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatment frequency depends on your diagnosis, overall health, and how your body responds. Your therapist will assess your progress and adapt your plan of care accordingly.
What should I do to prepare for a session?
-
Avoid eating 30 minutes prior to treatment
-
Stay hydrated and use the restroom before your appointment
-
Wear loose-fitting clothing or bring shorts/swimwear for access to treatment areas
What should I do after my session?
Depending on how you feel, we may recommend:
-
Increased water intake
-
Use of heat or ice
-
Gentle stretching and movement
Is dry needling covered by insurance?
Integrative dry needling is a therapy technique—not acupuncture. While it may be eligible under your physical therapy benefits, many insurance plans do not cover dry needling.
